Welcome to Akyede Art. "Akyede" in the Akan language of Ghana means "gift". On this site you will find a wide collection of original art for yourself or any special person. Most of our paintings are contemporary abstract art using acrylic on canvas and non-traditional techniques.

About the artist, Akwasi Oppong

My interest and appreciation for art goes back to my early years. Growing up in Ghana, West Africa with a father who did textile design and a mother who was a director of Art Education, I was greatly inspired by their work.

Art has always been my passion.  In my teen years I designed wall arts and cards. I graduated from Worcester State College in Central Massachusetts with a BA in Communications and Web design.

 I have used various media like water color, pencil and also explored the use of non-traditional ones like dead tree bark, paper on canvas and new acrylics which has always thrilled me.

I appreciate the narrative in creative design and enjoy the opportunity and challenge of finding art in nature as well as man-made objects. Neglected objects have character and form which when used in a piece of contemporary art any viewer could appreciate and tell a different story about what they see.

One of my greatest achievements is contributing a design tile to the Worcester Community Mosaic at the Worcester Art Museum in Worcester Massachusetts.

Color, texture, contrast and the “unplanned” effects is what inspires me.
